Tierra Whack Is Everything at Once in Long-Awaited Debut Album 'World Wide Whack'

“I hope your only expectation was for me to say how I feel.” Six years into building a household name and getting co-signed by icons like Beyoncé and Quest Love, Tierra Whack’s debut album World Wide Whack is an honest account of her raw, unfiltered, and completely wacky truth.

A former XXL Freshman with a catalog of mixtapes and eclectic features under her belt, it’s taken a while for the world to receive the official makings of a project from Whack, and upon listening, it’s evident why. World Wide Whack is robust and kaleidoscopic, telling a complex story of attempting to find yourself while the world decides who you are.

The songs burn quickly, a tactic Whack is known to have mastered, though it never compromises on content. “27 CLUB” is a sobering ode to suicide and those gone too soon, while “SHOWER SONG” is a funky declaration of singing in the shower. Ping-ponging between extremes, this album reinstates a truth we’ve already come to know; Whack is quirky and introspective, somber and erratic, she is always everything at once.

“IMAGINARY FRIENDS” is a playful take on a sneaky link, employing the imagery of an imaginary friend to represent the lover who’s also a ghost. “NUMB” tapers things back down a few notches, as Whack murmurs notes of regret and longing over an astral beat.

Ultimately, the Philadelphia native continues to rewrite what it means to be an artist, implementing elements of theater and loud color into every inch of this project. World Wide Whack is deeply immersive, luring in a child the same way it would an adult by blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. Tierra Whack is a beacon of creativity bursting at the seams, sure to be a guiding light for many of the new artists sprouting today.
