The Beaches Navigate Heartbreak in New Single “Touch Myself”

Everyone’s favorite girl group, The Beaches, have done it yet again with their latest single, “Touch Myself,” an extremely candid and personal song about heartbreak.

There are plenty of songs about the ways that heartbreak takes you by surprise; when you’re walking down the street and you see the restaurant where you had your first date or you see a dozen red roses and remember how your ex would surprise you with flowers. “Touch Myself” focuses on the moments of heartbreak that come during sex and self pleasure following a breakup.

“Touch Myself is a song about being so heartbroken you can’t even masturbate, because when you do, it just makes you think of your ex,” shares the band. “It’s about how grief can sneak into the most private parts of your life and leave you feeling totally wrecked.”

The song may focus on a private part of life but The Beaches aren’t hiding behind metaphors in their lyrics, they’re laying it all out for everyone to see. Their passion shines in the chorus with lead singer Jordan Miller singing “And I know I could have someone else / In the shower of a cheap motel / But I'm scared to even touch myself / 'Cause when I do, I think of you / O-oh.” The honesty continues in the third verse with Miller admitting “Hid my bullet / 'Cause everything waist-down is broken / Don't need no batteries / 'Cause the strap's in the trash with my self-esteem.”

Despite the song’s dejected subject matter, the accompanying instrumentation is bright and peppy, full of energetic drums and guitar. It’s a breakup song but not a cling to a pillow and cry breakup song but rather a scream at the top of your lungs breakup song.
