Omar Apollo Reminds Us to "Stayback" and Protect Our Energy

With coronavirus not slowing down until the US can collectively learn to wear masks, we've all learned our fair share of social distancing. However, through his new single, "Stayback," Omar Apollo is reminding us of a different kind of precaution - emotional distancing.

Driven by a simple kick and snare along with a rubbery, in-the-pocket bass, "Stayback"  features warm electric guitar, spurts of synth and some crunchy guitar solos weaved in throughout.

Apollo kicks off the chorus with a straightforward confession, "You know I been feeling you since way back." The panned vocals paired with falsetto layers feel reminiscent of Prince, as Apollo then declares, "but you could never love me so stayback, stayback." Apollo swings back and forth between admitting his feelings and creating boundaries, reminding us how tough it can be to accept what may be best for ourselves. The song concludes with Apollo repeating, "I can't help that you been on my mind."

The release is also accompanied by an exhilarating music video in which Apollo heads to a party with friends before locking eyes with the man that's been on his mind, only to see the object of his affection's attention lies elsewhere. He then trips into a pool as if falling into slow motion, as everything deepens in pitch. The scene powerfully conveys how easily a specific person can make your stomach drop and make time seemingly irrelevant.

We all hear about the importance of physical distancing, but a dose of emotional distancing can also be healthy. (Though, the six feet apart rule doesn't quite translate).  Still, sometimes it is best to "Stayback" and protect your energy.
