Mk.Gee Has Us Looking to the Stars With "Untitled"

Sure he might be an indie pop god and lofi funk genius, but more than anything, Mk.gee is a charmer, and he's already won over all of our hearts. So when he teased new music was coming out before the year's end, our mouths watered and our ears were ready. With his new single "Untitled," his debut single under a joint venture between IAMSOUND and Interscope, I would like to give the artist yet another identifier - total badass.

Written and produced by Mk.gee, "Untitled" sounds like he locked himself in a bathroom at Gesaffelstein's party and played Tame Impala's Currents on loop with the lights off. Unlike Pronounced McGee, he backs away from his ever-present guitars and instead embraces a nomadic ambient framework, choosing repetition over variation, building up rather than breaking down. He creates a pounding-on-the pavement-paced glitchy and groovy melody with what sounds like only synths and a digital drum pad. How can he use so little to produce a sound with so much? That's his genius.
"Untitled" is such a good walking song. It matches the rhythm of our natural cadence. Its elasticity makes it sounds like the soundtrack to a fashion show occurring somewhere off in the Milky Way, complete with iridescent sneakers and unnaturally shiny prints.
The space-evoking track details Mk.gee in the battle against astrology. He ponders how much his "star sign" could be affecting his romantic relationships. With this perspective, it's only natural that Mk.gee's created a sound that captures his innermost feelings of self-reflection and curiosity concerning topics that, in general, always baffle humans: astrology, space, and ultimately the thought of what is out there for us… be it in life or in love.
