Sonic songstress Kacy Hill returns with a beautiful spring offering, her new single “When in Rome." Following last year’s Bug LP, Hill’s first release of 2025 carries over the past record’s ethereal energy but expands into new sonic territory. “When in Rome” gives us a first glimpse into Hill’s forthcoming project, which will be a collection of tracks ushering in a new era of reinvention for the prolific singer-songwriter. 

Co-written with John Vincent III and co-produced by Tommy King, “When in Rome” leans into a sound Hill has always incorporated into her musical world, but has never fully leaned into until now. This genre pivot is a treat for the ears, delivering a gorgeous americana-folk soundscape that suits Hill’s unique vocal to a tee. A simple, familiarly captivating, guitar strum sets the tone for the melancholy track that is “When in Rome”. 

The track explores a lesser discussed phase of a break-up, the “hoping stage”. On the inspiration behind “When in Rome”, Hill shares “In the depths of my own grief, I often imagined running into my ex unexpectedly and forgiving everything in the past to start something new and circumvent the inevitable pain of loss.” The delicate instrumental helps paint this picture beautifully, evoking the bittersweet complexities of missing someone you know is gone for the better. With its visceral storytelling and vulnerable lamentation, “When in Rome” feels straight out of another time, further solidifying the choice to exist fully in a new genre was the right one.
