Channel Seven Hits the Mark on the Smooth as Hell "What You Know"

Chicago’s newest R&B duo Channel Seven is formally introducing themselves to the world, claiming rightful space with the melodic single “What You Know.”

Channel Seven, consisting of Coop and Marz, is only a year into their musical careers, yet arrive with a fully formed understanding of who they are. Named after the lucky number seven, known to represent completion, they’re not looking to the world to fill them in; they come dressed in a distinctive sound that encompasses their delightfully soulful essence. Their music is an extension of their chemistry, and you can taste notes of their love in every line.

Following their debut single “Steam,” an R&B track as smooth as cocoa butter that’s already caught the attention of many, “What You Know” is an ambitious follow-up. Giving Coop the opportunity to showcase his lyrical malleability, the artists are mastering a back-and-forth dance, paying homage to the chilling brilliance of Chicago in the single’s accompanying video.

Though the debate about R&B’s pulsing heart remains polarizing, musical acts like Channel Seven are a reminder that its evolution is something to be celebrated. With elements of neo-soul and lofi, they’re helping to deepen the tone and saturate the shades of R&B, which scares many of the genre’s purists. because experimentation threatens familiarity. It’s, however, Channel Seven’s bravery and authenticity that marks their true artistry.

Their vibrancy, beyond talent, is thanks to their doe-eyed entry into the game; they’re not yet tainted by the theatrics. They enjoy the art they’re producing and simply want to share it, uninterested in being better than anyone else doing the same. One can only hope their purity remains protected, as they stand as one of the new age’s most promising acts.
