Arm's Length Battle Isolation On Folk-Punk Inspired Single "You Ominously End" | THE NOISE

Canadian emo band Arm's Length has released its newest single, "You Ominously End," an offering from its upcoming sophomore album, There's A Whole World Out There, out May 16. This single marks a significant evolution in the band's sound as they confront the isolating experience of dealing with mental illness. By incorporating a banjo, they explore a folk-punk vibe, resulting in an unexpected yet flawless addition to their discography.

A gentle banjo-led introduction sets the stage for a more urgent energy, driven by chaotic guitars and drums in the first verse. Allen Steinberg's vocal delivery draws us deeper into the emotional landscape with heartbreakingly detailed lyrics. The first chorus, which confronts a suicide attempt, is delivered with a raw passion and desperation that invites the listener to empathize with the emotional journey of the song.

"You Ominously End" is a deeply personal exploration of the shame and isolation that often accompanies mental illness, especially when it feels impossible to support loved ones who are also struggling," shares vocalist and guitarist Allen Steinberg. "In writing this song, I aimed to capture that isolating experience through vivid storytelling. The tragic theme of the song is juxtaposed with country/folk elements, creating a jarring effect. This contrast makes it one of our most cherished tracks by Arm's Length, a testament to our personal connection to the song."

The country-folk leanings of the track intensify in the second verse, with moody harmonies quickly moving over plucked instrumentation, building into a dynamic second chorus. The track peaks on the bridge as heavy instrumental breakdowns rumble underneath passionate yet harsh vocals, underscoring the desperation and pain throughout the track. After this intense moment, the band strips it back to a slowly plucked banjo with soft vocals to carry the listener to its close, leaving us with the line, "when I check in/ it's like I'm feeling for a pulse."

The accompanying music video, directed by Alex Scalzo-Brown, is an engaging visual that cuts back and forth between the band playing the song inside a trailer and snippets of a home video that becomes increasingly more chaotic and desperate as the song continues. The video's narrative mirrors the song's emotional journey.

"You Ominously End" follows the success of their last single, "Funny Face," released upon announcing their new upcoming album. Arm's Length recently announced a spring headline tour and a string of special album release shows that will hit major cities across the US.
